Gas Snow Throwers, Advantages Over Electric
When it comes to deciding on whether to buy a gas snow thrower or electric snow thrower, there are advantages and disadvantages to each. The decision on which one really boils down to looking at which type gas or electric best fit’s your need. In this article we will look at the different types of gas snow’s thrower and their advantages over electric.
One point I want to bring up first which might be consider a disadvantage to some, is the price. If you are thinking about buying a gas powered snow thrower keep in mind that they are more expensive than a electric snow thrower. They can be a bit pricey from a hundred dollars on up into the lower thousand dollar range for top of the line units. However as I mentioned gas snow thrower’s have several major advantages over their electric counterparts.
Advantages to Gas vs Electric
Here are the biggest advantages of a gas snow thrower vs electric snow thrower
1. As they are gas powered no electricity required which means…
a. No extension cords
b. Don’t have to worry about power outages
c. Go where ever you want to go
2. Both single and two stage snow thrower’s are more powerful than electric
a. Can remove up to 2 feet of snow
While there are several gas snow thrower brands and models available they only come in two category’s… single stage motors and two stage motors.
Single-stage snow thrower’s are smaller in size and horse power than the two stage models. We are only looking at gas powered units here as single stage thrower’s are also electric. They use a single high-speed bucket wheel that allows snow to be moved inside and outside of the unit. Excellent for clearing driveways, sidewalks, just about any flat surface. These are designed for homeowner use who live in areas that receive light to moderate snow fall… we are talking a few inches not feet.
Two stage gas snow thrower’s for home use are much larger units, have a lot more power and can handle moderate to heavy snow clearing jobs up to several feet. Many are self-propelled, meaning they have a transmission you don’t have to push it… it pulls itself forward. Most models have tires with snow chains, some have tracks like a mini bulldozer. The best two stage machines come with at least 4 forward speeds and 2 reverse. The reverse gear allows you to back the unit up and will help to prevent the snow blower from getting clogged up.
While two stage blowers run on gas and have a manual pull start, most usually come equipped with an electronic start option. They are available with 2 stroke or 4 stroke engines. These work horse’s range from a few horsepower to very large machines powered by diesel engines of over 1000 horsepower (750 kW).
